Chatsworth High School: 2010 Year in Review

Softball, football teams make CIF championship runs, but come up one game short.

Chatsworth pitcher Cheyenne Coyle had one of the best high school arms in the country.

The Chatsworth football team rode the legs of running back D'ondre Alexander through the CIF City Section Division II playoffs.

The Chatsworth softball and football teams reached the CIF City Section championships of their respective sports. Both came up one game short of winning a CIF title.

Coyle had one of the more dominating seasons in high school softball. She was 20-3 with 150 strikeouts and a 0.93 ERA. She had 13 complete games, four shutouts and recorded three saves.

She was also second in the West Valley League in hitting, batting .528. Her Chatsworth teammate, Chelsea Anaya, led the team and league in hitting at .579.

Coyle, who graduated in June and is at the University of Florida preparing for her freshman college season, led the West Valley League in home runs with 13 and RBIs with 40. When she wasn't pitching, she was playing shortstop.

Chatsworth romped through the West Valley League, going 10-0, and entered the CIF City Section playoffs as the No. 4 seed. The softball team crushed Crenshaw, 27-0, in the first round, then beat El Camino Real, 3-2, in the quarterfinals and Carson, 5-4, in the semifinals.

But Chatsworth was shut out, 1-0, in the championship game against Kennedy of Granada Hills at Cal State Northridge.

The Chatsworth football team reached the championship game of the CIF City Section Division II playoffs, losing to Fairfax, 51-7.

Alexander rumbled through the playoffs, rushing for 425 yards and eight touchdowns in four games. He compiled 1,437 rushing yards and scored 31 touchdowns in 15 games, including playoffs.

Chatsworth averaged 39 points per game in the playoffs and went 11-4 after going 2-8 in 2009. It was more of the more impressive turnarounds in high school football. Chatsworth went 4-1 against West Valley League opponents, its only loss coming against Woodland Hills Taft, a team that reached the semifinals of the City Section Division I playoffs.

The Chatsworth baseball team was the No. 1 seed and reached the semifinals of the CIF City Section playoffs.

Chatsworth shut out Narbonne, 9-0, in the first round of playoffs and beat Woodland Hills Taft, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. But Chatsworth (25-5) lost to San Pedro, 8-5, in the semifinals.

Chatsworth, coached by Tom Meusborn, was 7-1 in league play and finished as West Valley League co-champions with El Camino Real.

Some of the top players were pitcher Christian Lopez, first baseman Steven Karkenny, outfielder/pitcher Aaron Brown, shortstop Jeff Bezjian and outfielder Justin Davis.



-- The Chatsworth boys basketball team reached the quarterfinals of the CIF City Section Division II playoffs, losing to University, 80-68.

Chatsworth was 15-13 overall, but went 3-7 in West Valley League play and finished in sixth place.

-- The Chatsworth girls basketball team reached the quarterfinals of the CIF City Section Division I playoffs, losing to Narbonne, 57-42.

Chatsworth, 12-13 overall, went 6-4 in West Valley League play and finished in third place. The team entered playoffs as the No. 5 seed and beat San Pedro, 62-41, in the first round.

Destinee Sellers scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds in the playoff game against San Pedro. Jasmine Wooton had 11 points and eight assists.

Senior guard Monica Jackson led the team in scoring with 28.9 points per game. She scored a season-high 43 points in a 76-53 win over Cleveland on Jan. 27. She scored 41 points in a 66-54 loss to Birmingham on Jan. 13.

Sellers averaged a double-double for the season with 10.8 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

-- The boys volleyball team lost in the quarterfinals of the CIF City Section Division I playoffs. After going 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the West Valley League, Chatsworth played Woodland Hills Taft and lost in four games in the first round of the playoffs.

Junior Madison Lomas reached the CIF-WSCGA Southern California championship of the girls golf playoffs. She shot an 85 in the CIF-WSCGA at The Golf Club in Murrieta.

-- The girls tennis team reached the quarterfinals of the CIF City Section playoffs and lost to Marshall of LA, 4-3, at Griffith Park.

Chatsworth upset fourth-seeded LA Center for Enriched Students in the first round of the tennis playoffs.
