Child and Family Guidance Center Honors Music Legend Dave Grohl and CEO Roy Marshall at Champions For Children May 12th

Child and Family Guidance Center (CFGC) will honor two remarkable individuals at its annual Champions for Children Benefit: Dave Grohl, one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene, and Roy Marshall, the organization’s long-time President/CEO and a respected mental health advocate. The event takes place Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 6:00pm at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

By honoring Grohl and Marshall, CFGC recognizes that enabling children to thrive is a partnership between the organization and the community. Marshall has led CFGC in providing innovative mental health services for children and families for more than a quarter century. Grohl brings his music-making talents and mentorship to youth in CFGC’s Sonic Teens program, which helps adolescents who cope with depression and trauma to overcome challenges through song writing. Grohl mentors the teens, providing guidance and inspiration. At the end of the program, the teens record original songs under Grohl’s guidance. At the Champions for Children Benefit, adolescents who worked with Grohl in the Sonic Teens program will perform music that they created under his mentorship.

“It was an honor to work with these kids and CFGC on the Sonic Teens program,” said Grohl. “It was such an incredible experience – one that proved the power of music to heal.”

About 250 guests are expected to attend Champions for Children – an annual event that honors community and mental healthcare leaders for their outstanding contributions to improving the lives of children and families. The master of ceremonies is Liza Snyder, an actress best known for her portrayal of Christine Hughes on the CBS sitcom “Yes, Dear.” Guests will enjoy a festive evening with live entertainment, dinner and a live auction. A moving program will spotlight the honorees and highlight CFGC’s innovation in the therapeutic creative arts, allowing guests to experience first-hand the transformative power of music.

“It is wonderful to receive this recognition, but the true honor for me is serving in a position that allows me to watch children and families thrive,” said Marshall. “What really makes CFGC’s work important is our team of dedicated mental health professionals and community members who employ innovative strategies to promote resilience and give children a voice.”

Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl is a 15-time Grammy-winning musician and two-time Emmy-winning filmmaker. He was a member of Nirvana from the ground-breaking Nevermind through the band’s swan song, In Utero. He went on to found the Foo Fighters, whose eight albums have sold in excess of 25 million copies and with whom he headlines stadiums and arenas the world over to this day. Needless to say, Grohl holds a special place in the hearts of the teens that participate in CFGC’s Sonic Teens and experience the transformative power of music with Grohl’s guidance. Grohl is a true champion for local youth, embracing CFGC’s goal to help children and families flourish in vibrant communities.

Roy Marshall

CFGC’s President and CEO Roy Marshall’s impressive career and dedication to his community were influenced by his parents, Arthur and Sylvia Marshall, community advocates who participated in the founding of CFGC in the 1960s. Since 1972, Marshall has

been affiliated with mental health and social service organizations on both coasts of the United States. His significant collaboration with colleagues and participation in associations and consortiums across the nation make Marshall a highly regarded figure in the mental health community. In his 27-year tenure with CFGC, Marshall has been instrumental in the agency’s growth. Currently, it employs a staff of more than 400 and includes six facilities in the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys. CFGC is proud to honor Marshall for his outstanding contributions to the organization and decades-long dedication to community mental health.

Sonic Teens

Sonic Teens is a 10-week Therapeutic Creative Arts program designed to help adolescents with mental health challenges to overcome obstacles through music expression. The group therapy curriculum combines song writing with therapeutic interventions determined to be effective in treating anxiety and depression, which are often a result of trauma. Its unique benefits included providing an alternate form of expression for youth who struggle to communicate painful emotions and therapy that centers on an empowering creative endeavor instead of only on mental health issues.
