Cooling Centers to Open Throughout the Valley During Deadly Heat Wave
The city will open air conditioned facilities to help people escape the heat between noon and 9 as temperatures reach 111 in some areas.
LOS ANGELES, CA - Recreation and senior centers, and other air- conditioned cooling facilities around the San Fernando Valley will offer extended hours starting Sunday to give residents a place to escape to during the three- digit temperatures anticipated for this weekend.
These Recreation and Parks Department facilities will open at noon and stay open until 9 p.m., past regular business hours, starting on Sunday:
- Canoga Senior Citizen Center, 7326 Jordan Avenue, in Canoga Park, (818) 340-2633;
- Lanark Recreation Center, 21816 Lanark St., in Canoga Park, (818) 883- 1503;
- Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd., in Lake View Terrace, (818) 899-8087;
- North Hollywood Recreation Center, 11430 Chandler Blvd., in North Hollywood, at (818) 763-7651;
- Mid Valley Senior Center at Sepulveda Recreation Center, 8801 Kester Ave., in Panorama City, (818) 893-3700;
- Sherman Oaks/East Valley Adult Center, 5060 Van Nuys Blvd., in Sherman Oaks, (818) 386-9674; and
- Sunland Park Senior Center, 8640 Fenwick St., in Sunland, (818) 353- 9571.
Los Angeles will be under an excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service that will be in place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.

County officials also have issued a heat alert for the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Basin, Santa Clarita Valley and the East San Gabriel Valley, lasting from Sunday through at least Tuesday, perhaps longer.
