DUI Checkpoints Planned For Labor Day Weekend Across LA

LOS ANGELES, CA — The holiday weekend is finally here, and as Angelenos celebrate the end of the summer party season, police will be out in force throughout Los Angeles county.

Several agencies will operate DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols starting Friday evening and continuing though Monday night to look for people driving while impaired or violating other traffic laws as part of the annual Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign.

The California Highway Patrol's "maximum enforcement period" will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 11:59 p.m. Monday. During that time, all available officers will be on patrol to enforce traffic laws.

"Whatever causes impairment makes you an unsafe driver," CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. "High visibility enforcement ... will help create a general deterrence and promote safer driving."

During the 2018 Labor Day weekend MEP, CHP officers statewide arrested 1,084 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence, a roughly 8 percent increase from the same period in 2017. Thirty-six people died in wrecks investigated by the CHP throughout California over Labor Day weekend 2018, according to the agency.

As part of the enforcement effort, the Los Angeles Police Department will conduct driver's license/sobriety checkpoints, as follows:

-- from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, on Slauson Avenue at the Harbor (110) Freeway;

-- from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at Alameda Street and Fifth streets;

-- from 8 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at Overland Avenue at Palms Boulevard;

-- from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday at Topanga Canyon Boulevard at San Jose Street; and

-- from 6 p.m. Sunday to 1 a.m. Monday at La Brea Avenue at Obama Boulevard.
