Off-Duty LAPD Officer Among 2 Killed By Speeding Driver: Reports

Officer Darrell Cunningham's car was struck by a driver who ran a red light while going more than 100 mph, according to reports.

NORTHRIDGE, CA — An off-duty police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was among two people killed Saturday when a driver going more than 100 mph ran a red light and slammed into his car, according to authorities and reports.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. in the 18000 block of West Roscoe Boulevard in Northridge, according to an NBC Los Angeles report citing police. According to reports, Officer Darrell Cunningham was driving a white Infiniti when it was struck by a black BMW at the intersection of Lindley Boulevard.

The LAPD confirmed Cunningham's death in a statement shared on social media.

At a news conference Saturday, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said the BMW was traveling at more than 100 mph and ran a red light when it hit Cunningham's car, CBS Los Angeles reported. Moore said the driver also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, reports said.

An unidentified female passenger in Cunningham's car was also killed in the crash, CBS Los Angeles reported. Another passenger, an off-duty San Bernardino deputy sheriff, was taken to the hospital with injuries.

The driver of the BMW was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, reports said.
