Explosion Rattles San Fernando Valley Neighborhood, Injuring 2

Authorities are investigating the possibility that a hidden drug lab was to blame for the late-night explosion in Tarzana.

TARZANA, CA — An explosion rattled a Tarzana neighborhood overnight, sending two people to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators believe the blast stemmed from a hidden drug lab, authorities said.

A 26-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday morning after a late-night explosion. Arson investigators were called to the scene along with a task force to conduct a search warrant, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded at 10:56 p.m. Thursday to 18805 Redwing St. after receiving a 911 call regarding a fire and they learned an explosion occurred inside an attached garage.

"It was terrifying: It sounded like a war was going on," one neighbor told Fox 11.

"It blew off the whole back of the garage," Los Angeles Police Department Detective Cecil Mangrum told Fox 11. "It's just amateurs trying to make a quick buck. And it results in stuff like this -- property damage and sometimes even death."
