Fire Breaks Out At Large Homeless Encampment in Northridge

The fire threatened a nearby commercial building.

NORTHRIDGE, CA — A fire broke out at a large homeless encampment, threatening a nearby commercial building in Northridge Wednesday night.

The blaze was reported at about 6 p.m. in the 19300 block of West Nordhoff Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

"Firefighters found a large homeless encampment on fire, with flames spreading to a quarter acre of grass and trees, and threatening a commercial building," Prange said. "Thirty-four firefighters deployed hose lines, held the flames to a quarter acre, and protected the nearby commercial building, extinguishing the flames in 25 minutes."

Ultimately, crews held the blaze to a quarter acre of vegetation and rubbish.

There were no injuries in the blaze, and the cause remains under investigation.
