Granada Hills Wins 2nd U.S. Academic Decathlon With Record Score

Charter school is only the third school in history to win back-to-back titles.

Granada Hills Charter High School captured its second consecutive National Academic Decathlon with a record score Saturday at the competition in Albuquerque..

Students scored the highest point total ever for a school in the national tournament's history, school officials said.

Sean Levy led the team with 9,441 individual points. Lev Tauz was close behind with 9,430, and Jimmy Wu had 9,182. Other team members are Christian Koguchi, Stella Lee, Priscilla Liu, Kimberly Ly, Hamidah Mahmoud, Julia Wall and Sean Wejebe.

Granada Hills is only the third school in history to win back-to-back titles, and remains the only charter school to win in the 30-year history of the competition. The team from the San Fernando Valley won 54,081 out of 60,000 possible points.

The team was scheduled to fly into Los Angeles International Airport at 8 p.m. tonight, following a Southwest Airlines flight via Tucson. The combination local-state-national champs will return to a welcome back celebration, news conference and family breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the school, 10535 Zelzah Avenue, Granada Hills.
