Labor Day Weekend: Festivals, and a Goodbye to the Butterflies

Here's a selection of weekend events for the entire family, in and out of the 818.

When/Where: Saturday; doors open at 5:30 p.m. Northridge Little League Field, 18755 Devonshire St., Northridge.

Why Go: It's the last weekend of the summer for this traveling outdoor festival. Enjoy six food trucks, live music from Get Back Loretta, shorts from Funny or Die and the feature presentation, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

The Taste 

When/Where: Friday through Monday. From Rodeo Drive to the Studios at Paramount to downtown L.A. Check times and schedule here.

Why Go: The Taste is a four-day food and wine festival sponsored by the Los Angeles Times and Food & Wine, celebrating all things culinary and epicurean. The event will showcase celebrity chefs at nine signature events. Event tickets cover everything, including unlimited tastings of chef creations from 40 of L.A.’s best restaurants; unlimited tastings from some of the top wineries, breweries and distilleries; amazing demos by celebrity chefs; live musical entertainment; fascinating panel discussions, and much more.

Malibu Kiwanis Chili Cook Off

When/Where: Friday through Monday (check the website for times); 23789 Stuart Ranch Rd., Malibu (at Civic Center Way and Stuart Ranch Road).

Why Go: Food, fun, games, music and community—that's why! This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Malibu Kiwanis Chili Cook-Off, Carnival and Fair.

Pricing: Entry is $10 per person per day; children age 5-11, $5; children under 5, free. The Four Day Event Pass gains entry for two people each of the four days of the event (an $80 value). To obtain tickets or Four Day Event Passes, call 818-588-5767 to pay by credit card over the phone.

 

Skirball Family Amphitheater Performances

When/Where: Saturday and Sunday, noon and 2 p.m. Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles.

Why Go: See magician David Chen and his Chinese-themed tricks on Saturday. Performance group Balle Fette bu Senegal performs on Sunday, bringing the vibrant traditions and culture of West Africa to life through its energetic music and dance.

Pricing: General, $10; seniors, full-time students and children over age 12, $7; children 2–12, $5.

 

Butterfly Pavilion

When/Where: Through Monday. Natural History Museum, 900 Exhibition Blvd., Los Angeles.

Why Go: It's the closing days of this living exhibit with more than 55 different butterfly and moth species and an array of plants that take up residence in this yearly seasonal exhibit.

Pricing: $5-$12; children under age 5, free.
