NORTH FORK, NY — A Mattituck-Cutchogue High School ninth grader has made her hometown proud: Student-athlete Casey Szczotka placed fifth overall in the pentathlon during the New York State Track & Field Championships, the district said.

The pentathlon consists of five events with the total combined points from each event determining the winners. During two "grueling" days of competition, Casey successfully competed in the 100m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and the 800m run with a final point total of 2,471 points, the district said.

In addition, the school year ended with all 21 varsity athletic teams qualifying for the New York State School of Distinction award, with each team having a team GPA of 90 percent or higher. Schools earn School of Distinction status by having 100 percent of its varsity teams qualify and receive the Scholar-Athlete team award during their sports seasons.
