Recycle Live Christmas Trees in Northridge: Here's How

Artificial trees and flocked trees cannot be recycled.

LOS ANGELES, CA — If you're looking for a more environmentally friendly way to dispose of your live Christmas tree, the City of Los Angeles has good news for you: there are several ways to recycle a live tree this year.

Residents of multi-family buildings need only leave their Christmas trees at the curbside on a regular collection day to have an old tree collected. Residents are reminded to remove all decoration and tinsel from trees, as well as tree stands. Artificial and flocked trees cannot be recycled and should be placed in a black garbage bin.

Trees can also be cut up and placed into a green recycling bin for pickup.

Residents can also take trees to the city's mulching facility at the Lopez Canyon Environmental Education Center located at 11950 Lopez Canyon Road, Lake View Terrace.

Trees are accepted at the facility from Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The facility only accepts live, undecorated and unflocked trees.

The city said trees collected through its recycling program are made into compost and mulch, which is available to residents for free. Mulch can be collected at 10 locations throughout the city.

When it comes to offloading holiday excess, the buck does not just stop at trees. Wrapping paper, cartons, cardboard, Styrofoam and similar expanded polystyrene products, plastics and gift boxes can also be recycled in the blue bin. LASAN is also collecting large pieces of coardboard, which must be broken down into four-by-four bundles weighing no more than 30 pounds. The bundles can be left facing the street next to the blue bin.
