Santa Clarita Brush Fire Triggers Evacuations

An elementary school and homes along Deputy Jake Drive were evacuated due to the fire.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A brush fire in Santa Clarita threatened some structures and prompted evacuations of McGrath Elementary School and some nearby homes Wednesday, but ground and aerial crews halted the blaze at about nine acres.

The fire was reported about 1 p.m. near the 21500 block of Deputy Jake Drive, burning uphill in a residential neighborhood.

McGrath Elementary students were evacuated to Newhall Elementary at 24607 Walnut St., where parents were advised to pick them up. Residents of some homes were told to evacuate, but water drops from helicopters and a SuperScooper aircraft kept the flames from damaging any structures.
