SigAlert: Fiery Crash Kills 2; Shuts Down 5 Freeway For Hours
The southbound side of the Golden State (5) Freeway in Sun Valley remained closed about five hours after a fatal big rig crash.
SUN VALLEY, CA — Two people died in a fiery crash that shut down the Golden State (5) Freeway in the San Fernando Valley for hours during the Friday morning rush hour. Commuters are being advised to avoid the area.
As of 9:50 a.m., the SigAlert remained in effect, and the southbound side of the freeway remained closed in Sun Valley, according to CHP Officer Moses Marroguin. Traffic is being rerouted to the southbound Hollywood (170) Freeway, backing up traffic on that freeway as well.
The crash occurred shortly after 5 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway where a big rig struck a stalled van and erupted into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP closed all southbound lanes during the investigation and cleanup.
