The department, in conjunction with local nonprofit organizations, A Chance for Children and The Water Buffalo Club, has partnered to establish a little free library inside the Devonshire Area Station lobby.

A little free library looks like an overgrown birdhouse, but instead of housing birds, users place books they’ve already read and take out ones they’d like to read.

“This library functions as an educational and outreach tool to children and community members in the Devonshire Area vicinity and builds a sense of community, while promoting literacy and a love of books,” says an LAPD press release.

Additionally, police officers will be involved in providing book-reading programs at the station with local schools and books will be re-stocked through generous donations of non-profit organizations, community members and LAPD Officers, the release says.

The organizations will unveil the book exchange Thursday.

The Devonshire station is at 10250 Etiwanda Ave. in Northridge.
