NOVATO, CA — Police arrested two people on suspicion of driving under the influence and issued 12 citations during a checkpoint held at South Novato Boulevard at Redwood Boulevard Friday in Novato.
The operation, which contacted 656 drivers, led to 43 drivers being directed to a secondary screening area.
The 12 citations issued included:
“We are committed to taking impaired drivers off the road,” said NPD Sergeant Trevor Hall. “Driving under the influence is not only dangerous but also has major consequences.”
A first-time DUI conviction in California can result in severe penalties, including an average of $13,500 in fines and associated costs, along with a suspended driver's license, police said.
The Novato Police Department plans to conduct a series of similar DUI enforcement patrols throughout the year. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
