Traffic Delays Expected As Major Bridge Project Begins In North Bay: Caltrans

Caltrans will start one-way traffic control as work begins to replace a nearly century-old bridge.

The project includes replacing the bridge, widening a nearby culvert, adding wider shoulders, installing ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps, and building a new crosswalk across Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to improve pedestrian access. (David Giuliani/Patch)

POINT REYES STATION, CA — Drivers traveling on Highway 1 near Point Reyes Station should expect delays beginning Aug. 10 as Caltrans launches one-way traffic control for the Lagunitas Creek Bridge replacement project.

The lane closures mark the start of the construction phase of the long-planned project to replace the bridge, commonly known as the Green Bridge, which Caltrans says no longer meets modern safety and seismic standards.

Built in 1929, the bridge carries State Route 1 over Lagunitas Creek just south of Point Reyes Station. It serves as a key route for residents, emergency responders, businesses, bicyclists and visitors traveling through western Marin County.

The project includes replacing the bridge, widening a nearby culvert, adding wider shoulders, installing ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps, and building a new crosswalk across Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to improve pedestrian access.

Caltrans said the project will also require a 21-day full closure of the bridge, currently planned for after Labor Day weekend in 2027. The agency expects the overall project to be completed in summer 2028, including final landscaping work.

More information about the project is available on the Caltrans website.
