Blessing the Animals

St. Francis of Assisi, the saint for whom the Franciscan order is named and whose name the new Pope has taken, loved all animals and considered them sacred.

He’s also one of the most revered saints of the Catholic Church and recognized during a feast day each fall. It’s a tradition that’s repeated all over the world, including in Novato, and gives families a chance to bring their pets for a blessing from the priest.

One such event was held Sunday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Lynwood Drive, where a procession of dogs, cats, guinea pigs and even a gecko and python were blessed by Pastor John Beckman.

“The ‘Blessing of the Animals’ service was a lot of fun and an important time of reflection,” said Beckman. “His (St. Francis’s) profound faith, witness and service to the poor and, of course, his connection with nature and all animals connects deeply with many people.”

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church was founded in Novato, CA in 1956 and is located at 1180 Lynwood Drive. The congregation serves over 500 members and has weekly worship services on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11a.m.
