City: Novato Crime Rate Declines in First Half of 2014
NPD reports decrease in felonies, total crime.
The following is a news release from the city of Novato:
The Novato Police Department released its mid-year crime statistics which revealed a nearly 9% decline in overall crime in Novato, compared to the same period in 2013. The City continues to experience historically low crime rates—with a more than 45% drop in total crimes over a 20-year period.
“The decline in crime in our City, is due to the diligent, outstanding work by our officers on a daily, 24/7, basis,” said Chief James Berg. “We have made substantial progress in the reduction of crime over the past few years and our department continues to be committed to keeping our community safe through education, enforcement, and working closely with our neighborhoods. I would like to thank our community for their willingness to get involved and keep us informed when they witness crimes—we would not be as successful nor as safe it weren’t for our involved community.”

According to the stats, both violent and non-violent crimes saw double-digit declines, including auto burglaries which are down nearly 65%. Traffic enforcement increased, which contributed to a significant reduction in injury accidents. DUI-related accidents have seen a 37% increase, which continues to be of concern to the Department.
“Novato is a safe city,” said Mayor Eric Lucan. “Public safety remains a top priority of the City and that commitment is evidenced by the investments we make in our youth, our infrastructure, and in our police. It is the tireless work of our NPD and that citywide approach to community safety that contributes to our amazing quality of life in Novato.”
