By Bay City News Service:
A California Conservation Corps crew found eight firearms buried on a hillside in Sausalito near U.S. Highway 101 on Thursday, a police lieutenant said.
The guns, four pistols and four revolvers, were buried between the highway and Spring Street, Lt. Kurtis Skoog said.
The crew was removing non-indigenous trees in the area when they found a partially buried plastic box, Skoog said.
Sausalito police then recovered the guns as well as a Marin Independent Journal newspaper dated November 2002, according to Skoog.
All but one of the heavily corroded guns was unloaded, and they appeared to have been at the location for many years, Skoog said.
Only five of the guns had legible serial numbers, and one of the five registered guns was reported stolen in Richmond in 1994, according to Skoog.
Police do not know who buried the guns or why, but Skoog said that several small marijuana grow sites were located on the same hillside in the past.
