Councilmember's Column (Mar 2 - Mar 8)
Councilmember Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
This past weekend, Novato Police handed out the 6th Social Host Ordinance Violation since the start of the year. Not familiar with Novato’s Social Host Ordinance? Simply put, any individual who allows two or more minors (youth under 21) to drink on their property or a property under their control can be cited and face fines of $1,000-$3,000. You can visit www.novato.org/socialhost/ for more information.
I applaud the Novato Police for their efforts as in each case, all minors made it home safe and sound. At the same time, I am extremely alarmed at the number of adults who are still providing alcohol or minors or leaving their homes unattended and without proper supervision.
What else can be done to curtail teenage drinking in Novato? Are the consequences of the ordinance not strong enough? Should we explore expanding the ordinance to also include anyone who supplied alcohol to the gatherings? Finally, what place might drug and alcohol testing have in our schools?

After six social host ordinance violations already this year, I am open to any feedback, thoughts, or suggestions.
