Driver Detained in Novato After 'Suspicious Device' is Found in Car

Police called the situation "fluid" Friday morning as the scene unfolds.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office has a detained a man after a suspicious device was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop this morning, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

The UC Berkeley Police Department’s bomb squad was called to the scene at Arthur and Tyler streets and “rendered the device safe,” Lt. Doug Pittman said.

Residents in the area were ordered to shelter in place and a few homes were evacuated as a precaution, Pittman said.

Novato High School at 625 Arthur St. was informed of the incident but there was no need for a lockdown, Pittman said.

The incident happened around 8 a.m., Pittman said.

Pittman called the situation “very fluid” this morning.

“We’ll have to find out where he was going and where he was coming from,” Pittman said.
