Mayor's Weekly (Nov 3 - Nov 9)

Novato's Mayor Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
I watched a great football game this past weekend. It wasn’t the 49ers / Saints game which may have saved the Niner’s season and it definitely wasn’t the Raiders / Broncos game either – that game was just sad. The game I am talking about was the City Championship between Novato High and San Marin. The Mustangs were the defending city champions and headed into half time with a 10-7 lead, but the Hornets were playing for both the city title and co-championship for the league. In the end, the Hornets prevailed in a well-played football game by both teams.

The stands were packed on both sides with students, parents, alumni, and several community members on hand. In all, it was truly a great atmosphere and the place to be in Novato on Saturday. It also got me thinking about how great it would have been to play the game at night under the lights. Or even better yet, what if both high schools had lights and could host Friday Night Football?

One topic that I often encounter around town is providing more activities for students in the evening hours. This is often discussed along with efforts to curb teenage drinking. While it isn’t a solution by itself, I think Friday Night Football could be a small piece of the puzzle to providing alternatives in Novato. The idea of lights at our football fields was tossed around about 5 years ago and brought out a lot of support as well as some expected opposition. With lights would also come noise—that’s a given. As one who lives close to Novato High and can hear the PA system from my house and would see the lights from my backyard, I would gladly welcome it.  Maybe it’s time to turn the lights on.
