Novato Babe Ruth Update: June 5

Cubs 3  Reds 2

Joe Galli and Julian Villamante led the Cubs to a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Reds. Galli gave up just three hits over five innings, and Villamante closed out the game for the Cubs with two scoreless innings, working his way out of a bases loaded one out threat in the bottom of the seventh. The Cubs broke out on top in the first as Villamante and Beau McAndrew drew lead off walks, and both scored as two Reds had a scary collision on a short fly ball. The Reds responded in their half of the first as Patrick Jameson lead off with a single to left. He stole second, and Joe Garbarino drove him home with a long double to right center. The Reds tied it at 2-2 in the 3rd as Garbarino got life on a dropped fly ball, and then stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Colby Lamond delivered him home with a single  to left. Reds starter Colin Farrell had retired eleven Cubs in a row when an infield hit by  Colin Hickey and  Reds misplays plated the go ahead run for the Cubs in the top of the fifth. The Reds threatened in the sixth as Matt DeFilippis walked and stole his way to third with no outs, but could not score. DeFilippis pitched two shut out innings in relief of Farrell to send the game to the bottom of the seventh, with the Cubs still leading 3-2. With one out, the Reds began to rally as Tyler Abell lined a single down the left field line. Ryan McDermott followed with a fly ball that fell in for a hit, and the Reds had the tying and winning runs on base still with just one out. Joey Rempe followed with a walk to load the bases. Cub reliever Julian Villamante bore down and go the final two outs to seal the Cubs win over the league leaders.
