Thursday Open House & Dharma Night
with Larry Barnett
Thu July 11th: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The Shambhala Shrineroom: Reminders of Our Basic Goodness
These informal events serve as an introduction to our Center, to Shambhala Buddhism and the practice of peaceful abiding meditation, as well as an opportunity for our current friends and members to share in the Dharma.
We begin our Open House evenings at 7:00 p.m. with meditation instruction and a short period of sitting meditation practice. At around 7:30, we provide either a short Dharma talk or video followed by a group discussion.
Afterwards, we adjourn for tea and snacks in our cafe-style community room and chat with Shambhala practitioners and other visitors.
There's plenty of time for visitors to ask any questions they may have and also to explore in greater depth the topic of the evening. The evening ends between 8:30 and 9:00.
Our guest speaker for July is Larry Barnett. His program is entitled:
The Shambhala Shrineroom: Reminders of Our Basic Goodness
This evening, we will explore Shambhala culture as represented by the various iconographic elements of our Shrineroom. In the words of Wendy Friedman, the Director of the Shambhala Office of Culture and Decorum:
“The forms of decorum are tools we can use to uplift the overall situation. We can then offer that uplifted environment as a gesture of graciousness to others. In that environment, we can all relax in our mutual trust of basic goodness—and then we have the possibility of joining the mundane with the magical. The Druk Sakyong (Trungpa Rinpoche) called it “joining survival and celebration.”
Our presenter that evening, Larry Barnett, is no stranger to the Sonoma Community. A past mayor and councilperson for the town of Sonoma and former Director of the Sonoma Shambhala Center, Larry currently serves on the Kalapa Executive (the leadership body of Shambhala that oversees the operational aspects of our worldwide community) as Communications Director for Shambhala International.
We look forward to meeting you!
