There Was a Hazmat Scare in Novato Friday Morning

... But officials say the substance that prompted the alert turned out to be harmless.

An unknown substance that sprayed on a Novato pharmaceutical company employee Friday morning caused a hazardous materials scare but turned out to be harmless, a Novato fire spokeswoman said.

The employee was working with a valve in the BioMarin facility at 46 Galli Drive at 8:11 a.m. when the valve malfunctioned and the unknown substance sprayed onto his body, fire spokeswoman Sandy Wargo said.

Per protocol, the employee left the area and sounded an alarm. The company’s hazardous materials team responded, documenting what happened and keeping others out of the area.

“They did a great job,” Wargo said.

She said the substance that came out of the valve turned out to be harmless “light salty water.”

She said that investigators are still determining exactly what the product was.
