If you’ve lived or worked in Novato for a long time, you’ve come across some inspirational, dedicated volunteers who make our City a great place to live. Year after year, there are business owners, nonprofit leaders and residents who seem to offer their help for everything, always stepping forward when it counts. Who comes to mind?
That person could be a strong candidate for the Novato Citizen of the Year.

The nomination period is open through Nov. 24 for the 2014 honoree, who will be announced during the annual Paint the Town Red celebration that marks the City’s birthday each January. Making it extra special and festive this time: the Novato Chamber of Commerce’s is marking its 100th anniversary at the event on January 24 at the Fireman’s Fund Insurance banquet hall.
Susan Stompe, Patty Bennett, Mike Read and Dennis Hagerty were recognized in recent years for their volunteer contributions to Novato. Who will be rendered nearly speechless this time? Each year since 1971, the Citizen of the Year Committee has sought nominations in the fall for the announcement which is kept a secret until the Paint the Town Red event.

“This is always one my favorite displays of community spirit,” said Dietrich Stroeh, chair of the Citizen of the Year Committee. “We not only throw a spectacular party, but we make our Citizen of the Year feel appreciated for all their contributions. It is probably the one and only time they get treated like a celebrity. The standing ovations are always emotional.”
