Smoke From Pipeline Fire Prompts Smoke Advisory For Parts Of San Diego County

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A smoke advisory remains in effect Tuesday for parts of San Diego County due to a brush fire on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District issued a smoke advisory for areas around Alpine, Fallbrook, Pala, Ramona and Valley Center.

The blaze, called the Pipeline Fire, sparked Monday afternoon near Stuart Mesa Road and Hammond Drive on the military base. The fire was estimated at 1,065 acres as of Tuesday morning, according to Cal Fire.

"As of Tuesday morning, overnight winds aloft have pushed smoke into foothill communities such as Ramona and Alpine. Onshore winds will strengthen by Tuesday afternoon, pushing the smoke back towards Fallbrook and Valley Center," the advisory stated. "Air quality conditions may improve at southern foothill communities like Alpine during the day. Air quality conditions at northern foothill communities like Valley Center may worsen during the day."

In areas with heavy smoke from the fire, air quality is expected to range from unhealthy for sensitive groups to unhealthy for all individuals, according to the district. Where smoke impacts are lighter, conditions may vary from moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The district advised residents near affected communities who smell smoke to limit outdoor activity. People should stay indoors, if possible, to limit their exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone, especially those with respiratory or heart disease, children and the elderly.
