Suspicious Packages Prompt Shelter-In-Place Orders In Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, CA — Suspicious packages found in Oceanside prompted a hazardous materials response, road closure and shelter-in-place orders for some residents Sunday, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded around 10:17 a.m. to the area of Castellano Way and Vandegrift Boulevard, where they found multiple suspicious packages requiring further investigation, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

Authorities established a safety perimeter while hazardous materials specialists and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Bomb/Arson Unit worked to identify and safely dispose of the materials.

Vandegrift Boulevard was closed in the affected area. Oceanside police issued a SigAlert for the closure.

Shelter-in-place orders were issued for residents in the 700 block of Arthur Avenue and the 4900 block of El Mirlo Drive. Police contacted residents in the affected areas and provided instructions, officials said.

Oceanside fire and police established a unified command for the response, with assistance from San Diego County Environmental Health, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department hazardous materials crews, Camp Pendleton hazardous materials personnel and the Sheriff's Office Bomb/Arson Unit.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities asked the public to avoid the area while the investigation continued.
