With doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and family-friendly performances visible from every seat, it's an easy outing for North County residents looking for a festive December tradition close to home.
3. San Clemente Train Line Reopens After Storm Damage (voiceofoc.org) — Rail service between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside has fully reopened after high surf from Hurricane Marie damaged tracks over Labor Day weekend, restoring both Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink routes. Oceanside riders no longer need bus bridges to reach Irvine, though nearby coastal cities are still grappling with emergency declarations and property damage. Expect more coastal preparation as a strong El Niño winter looms.
4. Del Mar readies for flooding, erosion as El Niño builds (northcoastcurrent.com) — Emergency planners are gearing up for a potentially very strong El Niño, and Oceanside is one of several sites where regional swift-water rescue teams can be pre-positioned to protect Del Mar during major storms. Local researchers say El Niño is bringing in species like Chilean devil rays and more sharks, but they emphasize that beachgoers in Oceanside and beyond still face very low risk in the water.
