Are You Ready For The Great ShakeOut Oceanside?
When the ground starts to shake, what do you do? If it involves a doorway, a triangle, or running - these are not earthquake-safe actions.

OCEANSIDE, CA — Some natural disasters like earthquakes are unpredictable and can result in serious injury or worse. Join the 7.1 million Californians who have registered for the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill at 10:21 a.m. on 10/21/21 and protect yourself and your family by practicing your response and securing items in your home and workspace.
It only takes a minute to Drop, Cover and Hold On for an earthquake drill, but if the time and Thursday are not convenient, you can schedule a better time and day for your family or workplace. Register here as an individual or a business to be counted as a participant.
“Southern California is a seismically active region and the best thing we can do about that is be prepared and know what to do,” said Jeff Toney, director of the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services. “Secure items to minimize or avoid injuries. And download the County’s SD Emergency app to enable ShakeReadySD, which could give you a few seconds warning to seek cover during significant shaking.”

Are you prepared? What we do to prepare now, before the next big earthquake, will determine how well we can survive and recover. Register for Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills at ShakeOut.org/register to join your community in practicing earthquake safety.
As always, you can hold your #ShakeOut drill when and where you want. You can choose another date or several dates, and include people in multiple locations (home, work, or school), perhaps through video conferencing. It's actually a good idea to practice earthquake safety in different situations each year.
How to Participate
Information for individuals, schools and many types of organizations
ShakeOut will occur in houses, workplaces, schools, and public spaces on October 21, 2021.
During the self-led drill, participants practice how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the safe response to an earthquake is to:
DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand
- If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter
- If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)
- Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs
HOLD ON until shaking stops
- Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts
- No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
ShakeOut is coordinated globally by the Southern California Earthquake Center at the University of Southern California.
