Authorities ID Oceanside Man Fatally Injured in Crash on Highway 76

BREAKING: The 37-year-old died at the scene of the crash Sunday at Old Grove Road, authorities said.

OCEANSIDE, CA — A man who was killed when his car hit a traffic light post Sunday night in Oceanside has been identified as a 37-year-old Oceanside resident.

Robert Tremeir McCorkle died at the scene of the crash on state Route 76 at Old Grove Road, according to officials with the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office and the Oceanside Police Department.

At about 7:06 p.m. Sunday, McCorkle was traveling westbound on Highway 76 in a 2015 Volkswagen Passat. He stopped for a red light, and then as the light turned green, he accelerated in an attempt to go around another vehicle, according to a report from the Medical Examiner's Office.

As he changed lanes, his Passat collided with the back of a 2002 Ford Explorer, causing the Explorer to overturn in the intersection of SR-76 and Old Grove. McCorkle lost control of the Passat, which continued across the intersection and into the light post, said Oceanside police Sgt. Rick Davis.

First responders arrived and had to extricate McCorkle from the wreckage. He was pronounced deceased at 7:20 p.m. of blunt impact injuries to his torso, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

The female driver of the Explorer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Oceanside police.
