Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- A big rig traveling on the Interstate 5 freeway northbound in San Clemente caught fire and exploded Thursday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol reported. The fire was reported at 12:57 p.m. on the freeway near El Camino Real, when an 18-wheeler holding loads of combustible tanks was seen with flames beneath its cab. The incident shut down all lanes of the freeway Thursday afternoon, creating a stand-still on the freeway stretching back miles. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton)
- Lea Brown, supervisor at Camp Pendleton's Recycling Center, couldn't temper her enthusiasm about the importance of recycling as much of the base's waste as possible. "I'm looking and researching new ways every day," she said as she walked across the yard showing off the multiple ways scrap metal, cardboard, even old tracks off of vehicles are collected and kept from landfills. The base was the first in the Marine Corps to recycle the brass casings that pile up at its many target ranges. Brown pointed out rows of 6,000-pound bins now filled with .50 caliber brass casings collected by Marines after firing round after round in training. (OCRegister)
- The Carlsbad Village Street Faire is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, featuring more than 800 vendors in downtown Carlsbad Village. The 48th annual event features a variety of local and international artisan-crafted goods, apparel, accessories and antiques, and a beer garden with live entertainment. There will be children's rides, an international food court and an old-fashioned pancake breakfast. Admission is free. (pacificsandiego.com)
- The FBI in San Diego Thursday warned parents and caregivers about an increase in "sextortion" incidents involving young children. According to the FBI, the agency has received more reports of adults posing as young girls coercing young boys through social media to produce sexual images and videos, and then extorting money from them. Sextortion is a crime, and involves an adult contacting a minor over online platforms such as an app, game or social media account. (San Diego Patch)
- California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Thursday his office has launched "a first-of-its-kind" investigation into the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries for "their role in causing and exacerbating the global plastics pollution crisis." "For decades, the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries have promoted the myth that we can recycle our way out of the plastics pollution problem," Bonta's office said in a news release. We can't — and for decades the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries have convinced the public that it's possible, according to the attorney general. (Murrieta Patch)
