Boy Scout's Father ID'd as Victim in Fatal Rollover Near Lake Henshaw [UPDATED]

The CHP has also determined what caused the SUV carrying Boy Scouts and parents to crash Saturday on State Route 79 in Santa Ysabel.

Santa Ysabel, CA — A man who died when an SUV carrying San Diego-based Boy Scouts overturned Saturday near Lake Henshaw in Santa Ysabel was identified Tuesday.

Front-seat passenger, Raul Cadena, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred at 9:13 a.m. Saturday on northbound State Route 79, about a mile and a half south of State Route 76, according to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Four other occupants of the vehicle, including two Boy Scouts, were injured as the SUV left the roadway and hit a tree, the report stated.

Two other adults were taken by ambulance and two Boy Scouts were taken by helicopter to local hospitals, according to Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser.

Some of the occupants had to be pulled from the vehicle by firefighters before being transported.

"The San Diego-Imperial Council is sad to report that a personal vehicle carrying two of our scouts and three parents was involved in a vehicle accident, resulting in injury to all involved and one adult fatality," a statement released by the Boy Scouts Saturday afternoon said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, the families, and their fellow scout troop members, and we are doing everything we can to support our scouting family during this difficult time."

Reached Tuesday, Karl Shelton, director of Support Services for the San Diego-Imperial Council of Boy Scouts of America told Patch that the four passengers injured in the crash are all expected to survive.

The fatal victim, Cadena, was the father of a Boy Scout, Shelton said, noting that efforts were under way Tuesday to put a fund raising plan into place for the crash victims.

A California Highway Patrol investigation into the crash revealed that the vehicle's right rear tire had tire separation, according to Kevin Pearlstein of the CHP.

"The driver over-corrected causing the vehicle to go off the roadway and strike the tree," Pearlstein told Patch.

According to Pearlstein, the driver and the two boys, both 13 years old, suffered minor to moderate injuries in the crash.
