EyeGnats a Vector or Way to Wipe out Organics?
Karen & Colin Archipley created Archi's Acres, in North County San Diego. Founders of Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training (VSAT) transitions Active Duty & Veterans into Agribusiness as a career.

County of San Diego attempts to over reach on organic farmers. At a time when Organics are at a premium and demand is high the County Board of Supervisors displays their lack of knowledge about pesticides and what a vector is. The result will be a detriment to small scale organic farming. Earlier this year Ret. Navy Veteran and VSAT Graduate Ray Shields created his business Dr.EyeGnat, gnat be gone. with the direction of Bill Brammer at Be Wise Ranch introduced a Eye Gnat Catcher that has been known to reduce eye gnats by up to 99% in approx. 18 months. According to CE SanDiego.ucdavis.edu.
But the County Ag Commissioner and Board of Supervisors is making an attempt to bully the organic farmers with the threat of spraying for eye gnats, which has been known to multiply the pest by up to three times by applying insecticides. This is a call to action for all people who support local Organic Farms and enjoy the purchase of organic local food in San Diego. Please stand up to supervisors who do not understand that if you spray you are no longer Organic.
Today is the day we must educate the our elected officials and public servants. Agricultural preserves need to be protected as do small scale organic farms. We all have the threat of natural disasters like the fires of 2007 that bring about pest that are annoying. Innovation is alive and well in San Diego. Let Organic Farmers do their jobs. Knowing we all want to be good neighbors. Please get involved and weigh in on Saving the Organic traditions. Keep your Pesticides off our land. Get involved!
