San Clemente Brush Fire Smoke Visible To San Diego County

SAN CLEMENTE, CA – Firefighters have stopped the forward progression of a brush fire in San Clemente on Wednesday, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. Smoke from the fire was visible across South Orange County to Oceanside, according to witnesses.

The La Pata Fire, which began near a golf course in South Orange County, burned 25 acres according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz. Kurtz said forward progress of the fire was halted at 3 p.m.

"Continuing progress is being made to extinguish the fire," Kurtz said.

The fast-moving brush fire started just after 1:45 p.m. near the Orange County and San Diego border, officials said. Camp Pendleton spokeswoman Lt. Abigail Peterson told Patch that the blaze broke out near the golf course Bella Collina San Clemente, off base and just a few miles from Camp Pendleton.

A total of 75 firefighters from both OCFA and Camp Pendleton, two helicopters and two air tankers worked to contain the fire off the end of Avenida Pico, Kurtz said. The air assault on the fire included repeated water drops, and an additional strike team was requested, Kurtz said.

There were no calls for evacuation, officials said.

Resident Kevin Black, who lives approximately one-half mile from the fire, shared a video on Twitter, showing the progression of the brush fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
