Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Buccaneer Park is almost ready for its makeover. The small, grassy, tree-lined park on South Pacific Street is a favorite with Oceanside locals who meet there to practice yoga, play basketball, picnic or enjoy the playground with their children. A small cafe sells coffee, breakfast burritos and smoothies to people who eat and chat at picnic tables shaded by umbrellas. Dedicated on July 12, 1981, the park's buildings, benches and playground equipment have seen better days and must be replaced, city officials say. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. One man died and four others were critically injured Sunday in a shooting at a Laguna Woods church. Authorities said congregants took heroic action to subdue the suspect, who was in custody. The Orange County Sheriff's Department said the shooting took place around 1:26 p.m. inside Geneva Presbyterian Church in an area south of Irvine near where I-5 meets I-405. The suspect was detained at the scene. Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said that a large number of the people inside the church during the shooting were of Taiwanese descent. (Times of San Diego)
  3. The San Diego Humane Society is extending its promotion to waive adoption fees for small animals and adult dogs seven months and older through Thursday, officials said Saturday.
The promotion is being extended because of the large influx of adult dogs, according to the organization's Nina Thompson. The SD Humane Society currently has 83 guinea pigs, 52 rabbits, 34 hamsters, four chinchillas, eight mice and one rat looking for new families, Thompson said. (NBC San Diego)
  4. The murder of Dane Williams, who was last seen alive during a night out with friends in San Diego, was ultimately solved after a Navy Corpsman was attacked months later. Dane Williams was living his best life in early 2008 and, as he'd noted on social media, was "stoked" about the future. But on January 26, 2008, Williams went missing after a night out with friends in San Diego, where he was taking part in the Action Sports Retailer Convention. Three days later his dead body was found rolled up in a rug in an alley about six miles away in City Heights by a dog walker who called 911. (Oxygen)
  5. A 200-acre fire that devastated an upscale hilltop neighborhood in Laguna Niguel, destroying 20 homes and damaging 11 others, was 60% contained by lines of cleared vegetation, authorities said Sunday. The Orange County Fire Authority said 456 firefighters were on the scene, using bulldozers and the heat-seeking capabilities of drones to seek out hot spots within the fire's perimeter.
