Camp Pendleton Brush Fire Prompts Evacuations

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A brush fire burning on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton blackened hundreds of acres and prompted evacuation orders Monday for parts of the military base.

The blaze, dubbed the Pipeline Fire, was reported in the early afternoon at Range 501, according to Camp Pendleton officials.

By 5 p.m., the fire had grown to about 920 acres in the southwestern reaches of Camp Pendleton, according to the nonprofit wildfire information service Watch Duty.

Evacuation orders were issued for the base's 32 and 33 Areas. The evacuation order for 33 Area was lifted around 8:30 p.m., but the evacuation order for 32 Area remained in effect.

Smoke from the fire was visible to base residents.

The North County Fire Protection District also issued a smoke advisory. Officials said the fire posed no threat to communities within the district despite visible smoke.
