Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Congrats to Camp Pendleton for being named Military Conservation Partner of the Year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "On Monday Paul Souza, regional director of the Service's Pacific Southwest Region, presented Brigadier General Jason Woodworth, Commanding General, Marine Corps Installations West-Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, with the 18th Annual Military Conservation Partner Award for its significant contributions to natural resource management and listed species. 'Camp Pendleton is a conservation leader and shining example of what can be accomplished for species recovery on military land,' Souza said. 'We are grateful for their dedication and stewardship and look forward to a continued partnership.'" Camp Pendleton works with several organizations to protect endangered and threatened species located on the base. (Times of San Diego)
- Just in time for winter heating, SDG&E is raising rates, again. "The price of energy from San Diego Gas & Electric is expected to rise almost 20 percent per kilowatt-hour come Jan. 1.
That amounts to a 15 percent increase in monthly energy bills, or about $23, for the average residential customer, according to a filing by the utility. 'SDG&E is forecasting higher gas prices and higher power prices in 2023 compared to those used to develop the initial May application (to set rates),' the utility wrote to the Public Utilities Commission." Oceanside is one of several cities that have opted to join the Clean Energy Alliance rather than buy energy from SGD&E. (Voice of San Diego) - Finally some good news about gas prices! "The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County recorded its largest decrease since at least 2018 Tuesday, dropping 7.2 cents to $5.985, falling below $6 for the first time since Sept. 27. The average price has dropped 13 consecutive days since rising to a record, decreasing 45 cents, including 1.4 cents Monday, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service. The decreases follow a run of 32 increases in 33 days totaling $1.213. The average price is 31.1 cents less than one week ago, but 59.5 cents more than one month ago and $1.542 higher than one year ago." In Oceanside, gas prices are even lower, with a gallon of gas as low as $5.08 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. (Patch)
- Camp Pendleton received a visit from the Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks on Monday. The purpose of the visit was "to gain a better understanding of JADC2 (Joint All-Domain Command and Control) coordination within the department, visit with service members, and discuss the effects of climate change on installation resilience. During her visit, Deputy Secretary Hicks also met with military personnel from Marine Aircraft Group (MAG 39) and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) personnel who support California wildland firefighting to thank them for their hard work and dedication and to discuss the effects of drought and wildfires on base operations."
