Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- Get ready for some super moon action this weekend! May's full moon, also called the "Flower Moon" reaches its peak on Sunday and Monday. It's also the first of two total lunar eclipses visible to Oceanside residents this year and will turn May's full moon blood red.
Like all celestial events, whether you'll be able to see the stellar lunar event, of course, depends on the weather. The National Weather Service currently forecasts mostly clear skies Sunday night, with patchy fog along the coastline. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch) - Camp Pendleton Fire Department reports that 300 acres have burned at this time. CPFD is actively fighting the fire. As of 4:40 p.m. Camp Pendleton Fire Department has reported a vegetation fire near the Romeo 3 training area. Smoke may be visible, but there is no fire threat to personnel or structures. The fire department is on the scene containing the fire. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- The majority of the Oceanside City Council approved a permit for a business specializing in biodegradable detergents and sanitizers to set up shop near the Peacock neighborhood. The approval came despite concerns raised by several nearby residents about the storage of more than 20,000 gallons of corrosive and oxidizing materials located within just a few hundred feet from their homes. (Coast News)
- On the morning of Sunday, May 8, Sheriff's Deputies and the Vista Fire Department responded to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a motorcyclist at the intersection of W. Vista Way and Emerald Drive in the city of Vista. A motorcyclist was traveling northbound on Emerald Drive and collided with a vehicle crossing westbound on West Vista Way. The unidentified man was transported to Palomar Medical Center via ambulance and is currently undergoing surgery for his injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. (Press Release Desk)
- Marine Corps First Lt. Riley Compton is a Neighborhood All-Star for many reasons. They range from defending America's freedom in her third year stationed at Camp Pendleton to earning Marine Female Athlete of the Year for her skills in bobsled. "To be honored with this award is incredible," Compton said. "I still can't believe it, but it brings me a platform that I can share to empower other women and Marines to pursue multiple things and be in the Marine Corps." (FOX 5 San Diego)
