Camp Pendleton Marine Killed In 'Aviation Ground Mishap' Identified

CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Military officials Friday identified the Marine who was killed this week during "routine military operations" on Camp Pendleton.

Texas native Cpl. Miguel A. Maya died as a result of an aviation ground mishap, according to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Maya, a U/AH-1 aircraft avionics technician, was pronounced dead around 5 p.m. Tuesday at the base.

Maya was with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 303, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to Cpl. Maya's loved ones during this difficult time," Lt. Col. Jason Caster, commanding officer of HMLAT-303, said in a statement. "Our priority right now is taking care of the family of our fallen Marine, and ensuring the well-being of our Marines and their loved ones."

The incident was under investigation.
