Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Hundreds of Reynolds Elementary school students and parents joined a rally on Friday to protest the possible closing of the school. A recent soil testing report of the property determined the ground might be unstable and pose a safety hazard. As a result, the district recommended the school be closed and students moved to nearby campuses. "In its online message, the district said measures have been proposed to help mitigate the liquefaction, but none guarantee the safety of the students and 51 staff members". A special board meeting will be held tonight to discuss the future of Reynolds Elementary. (KPBS)
  2. A developer is proposing an eight-story mixed-use development project on North Coast Highway and Neptune street in Oceanside. If approved the building would become one of the tallest in the city, but many locals are against Oceanside developing too fast. "You can't stop progress ... but you have to do it smarter," said Shawn Ambrose, owner of the Real Surf Shop, "It should be growth that looks like Oceanside, that has our feel, that's not like everywhere else." Plans for the eight-story development, called Modera Neptune, include 362 apartments, 62 hotel rooms and a three-level underground parking garage with 499 spaces. (San Diego Union-Tribune / paywall)
  3. At least eight people died after their boat capsized near Black's Beach on Saturday, according to authorities. "Lifeguards discovered several bodies and two overturned pangas spread over about 400 yards on the beach, according to the fire department, which said no one was found alive but lifejackets and fuel barrels were located nearby. The deceased were all adults, authorities said. The search continued Sunday, according to U.S. Coast Guard Capt. James Spitler, who said the number of deaths along the California coast is unknown, and boats are often overloaded and travel in low-visibility conditions like those Saturday night." (Patch)
