CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Crews continued to work Thursday to contain three wildfires on Camp Pendleton.

The blazes, which began spreading over the weekend through training areas on the military base, had scorched about 8,600 acres by Wednesday afternoon, according to Camp Pendleton officials. The fires posed no threats to people or structures on and off the base.

The fires were initially allowed to burn, while the Camp Pendleton Fire Department monitored the flames. As they spread amid a heat wave, however, military firefighters worked to contain the blazes with assistance from Cal Fire crews in the air and on the ground.

Military training maneuvers sparked the fires, according to John Crook, deputy chief of the Camp Pendleton Fire Department.

Smoke from the fires impacted communities in North County, as well as southwest Riverside County. Smoke was visible as far away as southern Orange County.

The fires sparked amid a heat wave that is expected to last through Thursday in the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Last week, a brush fire sparked in the northeastern reaches of the base, near De Luz Road in Fallbrook. The blaze briefly prompted evacuations and threatened a structure.
