Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. A six-and-a-half-hour police standoff with an armed man accused of leading police on a chase on a stolen motorcycle and then boarding a small boat ended without incident late Friday in the San Luis Rey River Trail area, authorities said. The man, who also was wanted on felony weapons charges, reportedly stole a motorcycle and led officers on a pursuit that ended in a rugged area near state Route 76 and Canyon Drive. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  2. Marine pilots are taking to the skies over Southern California to test their warfighting abilities and hone skills to fight future enemies more effectively. People on the ground in some areas are likely to notice the training above. As part of the Marine Corps' modernization, pilots, crew chiefs and aircraft technicians from Miramar's 3rd Marine Air Wing are working with Marines from Camp Pendleton's Marine Expeditionary Force and the Navy's 3rd Fleet based in San Diego to create realistic scenarios for more than two weeks of training exercises.   4. A woman who pleaded guilty to the killing of a Carlsbad resident who was stabbed nearly 150 times was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Malissa James, 29, previously faced a possible death sentence for the March 11, 2019, killing of 63-year-old Marjorie Gawitt. (City News Service)
  5. The Golden State plans to shut down death row, phase out the capital punishment and transfer condemned inmates in the next two years. In 2019, the Democratic governor placed a moratorium on executions, and the state has not carried out an execution since 2006. In 2019, there were 737 inmates on California's death row just after Newsom signed the executive order to impose a moratorium on execution, the Los Angeles Times reported. (Los Angeles Patch)
