DUI Checkpoint Slated Saturday In North County

CARLSBAD, CA — Police will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday night in San Diego's North County.

The checkpoint will take place from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location in Carlsbad, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," police Lt. Alonso DeVelasco said. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to the department.

Funding for the checkpoint program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
