Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:

  1. Matsu, located just off South Coast Highway in Oceanside, is a new fine dining experience that offers guests elevated Japanese cuisine and superb hospitality. The modern Japanese concept was created by executive chef-owner William Eick, who started the venture as a pop-up back in 2019. Now that Matsu has been realized as a brick-and-mortar 48-seat fine dining restaurant, Eick was able to build and design the space to bring his vision to life, along with his own dream team - sous-chef David Duarte and general manager Joe Devlin. (FSR magazine)
  2. An off-duty San Diego Police officer was struck by a car as she tried to remove tires from Interstate 5 lanes in the Oceanside area Friday morning. California Highway Patrol officials said the collision was reported just before 6 a.m. on southbound I-5, near the transition to state Route 76. (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  3. Fatal stabbings, sextortion schemes are some of this week's police, fire and courtroom stories from across San Diego County. One person was killed when a SUV crashed on Interstate 5 in Oceanside near Camp Pendleton. A Carlsbad resident is facing charges in connection with an I-5 crash that killed a 65-year-old man, the CHP said. (Patch)
  4. On April 29, 1975 – as U.S. helicopters evacuated military and civilian personnel from besieged Saigon – the first of an estimated 50,000 Southeast Asian refugees began arriving at Camp Pendleton. The San Diego base became a temporary resettlement center for South Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian refugees who fled their homelands as the United States withdrew from the war in Vietnam. Those who came to Camp Pendleton remained for about 45 days before getting new homes under sponsorship of churches, community groups and individuals. (Stars and Stripes)
  5. San Juan Capistrano has passed on a proposal for a man-made wave pool. A pitch for an artificial wave pool in San Juan Capistrano has wiped out, with city officials opting to look at other proposals for future uses of the city's Northwest Open Space area. (OC Register)
