Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- April is Earth Month and the team at Green Oceanside has lots of ideas for showing the Earth some much-needed love! Join us for an Earth Day of Service and Celebration at Buccaneer Park on Saturday, April 23 at 9AM – 1PM. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- Oceanside's first homeless shelter will be run by the San Diego Rescue Mission at the old Ocean Shores High School. But the buildings are in need of a remodel and a shovel has yet to hit the ground to prepare for the 50-bed homeless shelter. "Not much has changed since we signed the service agreement and I think that's unfortunate... but patience is a virtue," said Donnie Dee, the president of the San Diego Rescue Mission. Dee says he hoped to be open by now, but since the site is city-owned, everything needs to be approved by them first.(KPBS)
- The question of what to do with the nation's spent nuclear fuel has recently garnered renewed attention. This is thanks in part to U.S. Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.), who represents the district encompassing San Onofre and has taken up the cause as one of his signature issues. In January 2019, he established a task force of local stakeholders to study the situation at San Onofre. He has also co-founded the bipartisan Spent Nuclear Fuel Solutions Caucus, with Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), and introduced the Spent Fuel Prioritization Act, which would ensure that the material is moved first from the most sensitive locations, including San Onofre. (The Washington Post)
- The Green Room Hotel in Oceanside is an oasis that immerses you into the local scene. Oceanside itself delivers all the laidback vibes and sunshine you could ask for on a trip to Southern California but without the overcrowded beaches and road-rage-provoking traffic of Los Angeles or San Diego. Although it's a little more under the radar, the city of Oceanside (particularly in South Oceanside) is a buzzing, up-and-coming area that's in the midst of a boom — with delicious restaurants, a lively bar scene, boutique shopping, and plenty of outdoor adventure. (UPROXX)
- The annual dredging of the Oceanside Harbor is starting soon. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will begin "mobilizing" today for the annual dredge of City of Oceanside Harbor inlet. "Lot 12 will be fenced off, fire rings will be removed, a portion of the river bed will be fenced and a marked pathway on Harbor Beach will be installed. "There will be significant heavy equipment moving on Harbor Beach. The H.R. Morris dredge vessel will arrive on Tuesday April 19." According to the city, the entire dredge cycle is anticipated to last 6 to 8 weeks, with a completion date no later than Memorial Day weekend. (Dredging Today)
