Brush Fire Burns 100 Acres On Camp Pendleton

BREAKING: The blaze broke out on base, but smoke is visible from surrounding communities​, officials said.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA – Camp Pendleton firefighters are battling a brush fire that broke out on a training range on base Friday.

The blaze sparked around noon on Basilone Road and quickly spread from a half-acre to 15 acres deep inside the base, officials said. By 3:10 p.m., the fire had burned 100 acres. Firefighters conducted a burn operation to remove excess fuels in the area.

Camp Pendleton Fire Department will continue to monitor the blaze. There are no threats to base structures, personnel or surrounding communities, base officials said.

North County Fire Protection District confirmed the flames do not pose a threat to the district, but smoke is visible from surrounding communities. Several people posted photos on Twitter of smoke in San Diego's North County.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, officials said.
