Brush Fire Burns 120 Acres On Camp Pendleton

CAMP PENDLETON, CA – A brush fire sparked Thursday on Camp Pendleton that burned dozens of acres and sent smoke into Southwest Riverside County.

The blaze, called the Weisgarber Fire, erupted around 3:15 p.m. about a mile west of the DeLuz gate in the eastern reaches of the military base. The fire burned 80 acres by shortly after 5 p.m., according to Cal Fire. As of 7 p.m., the flames had scorched 120 acres and was 40 percent contained.

A total of 75 military and civilian firefighters battled the blaze with 12 engines, three helicopters, three hand crews, three dozers, two air tankers and a water tender.

There were no reports of structural threats. The flames posed no threat to Fallbrook or the surrounding area, the North Country Fire District confirmed.

Smoke was visible as far away as Murrieta and Temecula. Officials issued a drift smoke advisory for residents in Southwest Riverside.

The fire was expected to be contained by midnight Friday, Cal Fire officials said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
