OCEANSIDE, CA — No one was injured in a fire that badly damaged one of the units of a duplex home Tuesday night in Oceanside, officials said.

The fire was reported at 8:08 p.m. at a duplex on Whaley Street, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

The first fire engine arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the emergency call, Battalion Chief Jeremy Brandt said. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames in a vacant unit that was being remodeled.

Crews were able to contain the fire so that it didn't spread to the second unit of the duplex.

"While the overall residence sustained significant damage, the timely and effective intervention of the firefighters saved the non-involved unit, which was occupied at the time of the fire," Brandt said.
