  2. Flu activity picked up in December in California. Across the Golden State, influenza is spreading at rates far below the average year but already well above last year's nonexistent flu season. In San Diego, Marine Corps leaders pointed to the strain of operations during the pandemic as a contributing factor in the July 2020 sinking of an assault amphibious vehicle that killed eight Marines and a sailor.
